Speech Therapy

Speech Therapy is the science that addresses disorders of speech, voice, communication, chewing, and swallowing in children and adults, regardless of the underlying cause, whether neurological, developmental, or functional. The range of conditions managed by Speech Therapy is broad, with the primary goal being the prevention, diagnosis, and rehabilitation of these dysfunctions, ultimately aiming for the individual's social reintegration and improved quality of life.

Patient evaluation

A specialized Speech Therapist employs specific techniques to evaluate patients with feeding and swallowing difficulties, voice disorders, apraxia, aphasia, dysarthria, reading difficulties, memory issues, orientation problems, and other higher cognitive function disorders. These conditions may arise suddenly, such as after a stroke or traumatic brain injury, or progressively in patients with dementia, Parkinson’s disease, or Multiple Sclerosis.

Speech Therapy assists with:

  • Enhancing language comprehension,
  • Improving communication and social interaction,
  • Addressing phonological disorders and dysarthria,
  • Developing non-verbal communication through gestures and alternative speech programs,
  • Retraining swallowing mechanisms.

The process

The speech therapy process begins with a detailed medical history, gathered from the patient or their caregiver, followed by an orofacial examination and an assessment of speech, communication, and swallowing. Speech Therapists at the Attica Rehabilitation & Recovery Center, in collaboration with Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Physicians, set therapeutic goals aimed at restoring these dysfunctions.

Specialized Cognitive Rehabilitation Programs

At the Speech Therapy Department of the Attica Rehabilitation & Recovery Center, specialized Cognitive Rehabilitation Programs such as Rehacom are utilized. These programs address memory, attention, perception, executive functions, visuomotor coordination, and visual field disorders. Additionally, the Rehalngest for Dysphagia Program is employed to manage swallowing difficulties effectively.
