Sleep and Sleep-Disordered Breathing Clinic

The Sleep-Disordered Breathing Clinic provides comprehensive, specialized diagnosis and treatment of conditions that affect breathing during sleep.

The aim

The aim is the substantial improvement of sleep quality, daytime functioning, and overall patient health, as well as the prevention of serious cardiopulmonary and metabolic complications. The approach is individualized and based on current scientific guidelines.

The Clinic is under the Scientific Direction of Mr. Konstantinos Gourgoulianis, Pulmonologist with specialization in sleep-disordered breathing, Emeritus Professor of Medicine, former Dean of the School of Health Sciences, Vice-Rector for Research, and Rector of the University of Thessaly.

Conditions treated include:

  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea
  • Central Sleep Apnea, including cases following central nervous system injury
  • Hypoventilation Syndrome
  • Primary and pathological snoring
  • Sleep disorders associated with:
    • Obesity
    • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
    • Cardiovascular diseases
    • Neuromuscular diseases and disorders of muscle tissue

Diagnostic Evaluation

Diagnostic assessment is performed through a combination of clinical evaluation and specialized tests, such as:

  • Polysomnography (in a sleep laboratory or at home)
  • Sleep oximetry, in combination with clinical assessment
  • Specialized questionnaires assessing sleepiness and sleep quality

The selection of the appropriate diagnostic method is based on medical history, symptoms, and the individual needs of each patient.

Therapeutic Approach

Treatment is based on a personalized management plan, which may include:

  • Use and adjustment of CPAP or BiPAP respiratory devices
  • Regular follow-up and treatment adjustments
  • Lifestyle counseling, including:
    • Body weight management
    • Sleep hygiene
    • Body position during sleep

At the same time, there is the possibility of interdisciplinary collaboration with a Dietitian, Psychologist, Physiotherapist, as well as Physicians of other specialties, such as a Rehabilitation Medicine Specialist, Neurologist, and Cardiologist, when deemed necessary.
